The choices we make today about our agriculture and food system determine how healthy, fair and future-proof the Netherlands will be tomorrow. Yet real change is still lacking precisely when farmers, businesses and citizens have long been on the move. MVO Netherlands, the TAPP Coalition, Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and the Young Climate Movement are therefore organising an election debate with the question: how do we make the agricultural system sustainable and future-proof? Extra fun: you can be there!
During this debate, candidate MPs will discuss concrete proposals that make a difference with each other and with the audience. Not empty words, but choices that matter. For now, and after the elections.
Led by Thomas van Zijl (BNR), we discuss three sharp statements at the intersection of agriculture, climate and food. The proposition introduced by MVO Netherlands is as follows:
Bring back the transition fund to help farmers convert to organic production as well as strengthen marketing.
Guided by organic farmer Cornelis Mosselman (BI-JOVIRA farm) from our Farmers Naturally network
The other two statements read:
The next coalition agreement should announce a fair price for meat that includes the costs of climate, health and farmers, among others, so that fruit and vegetables can become cheaper.
Increase groundwater level on peatlands to 40 cm below ground level, in line with climate and soil management goals.
