The New Economy Index is the figure we assign annually to the sustainability of our economy. Last year, it stood at 16.5 per cent. Where will we be in 2024? We will know more on 23 January 2024.
That's when we launch the new edition of the New Economy Index (NEx), our annual survey of the sustainability of the Dutch economy. Together with research agency SEO, we examine the state of our 7 themes, which together make up the NEx: biodiversity, new wealth, green energy, circular economy, inclusive entrepreneurship and real prices.
To arrive at a sustainable economy, at least 20 per cent of the economy must deal in that new economy by the year 2025. That point represents a tipping point: after that time, the economy becomes more and more sustainable faster and there is no turning back. Why in 2025? Many official targets have their sights set on 2030: the Sustainable Development Goals, the Raw Materials Agreement and the Climate Agreement. These goals are only achievable if we reach a tipping point well before then.
It exposes areas of concern: last year it became clear that we still need to take more action on New Wealth, with a low score of 4.9 per cent;
It provides insight: the results of the four editions ('20, '21, '22 and '23) show that an increasing share
of the Dutch business community is undertaking in the new economy;
It makes measurable: to achieve the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Commodities Agreement and the Climate Agreement aimed at 2030, we need to know well before then that we are well on our way.
Want to know how the NEx is established and what we need to do concretely for each theme to get the NEx score up? On the NEx page you will find all the information.
