Surely the CSRD only applies to large companies with more than 250 employees? Initially, yes, but that is no reason to disregard the regulations as an SME. On the contrary. The large companies to whom the CSRD now applies are obliged to report on what happens in their supply chain. And then your company may just come into the picture. At the same time, the CSRD also offers plenty of opportunities for SMEs. Time to put things in order during the Community of Practice: CSRD opportunities for SMEs.

In a series of four meetings, we will prepare you as an SME for the CSRD and everything that comes with it. What can you expect from big clients, how do other companies already fly this and where are the opportunities to improve your sustainability performance and communicate about it? You will find out during this Community of Practice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CSRD?

The CSRD directive requires large companies to report on issues such as CO2 emissions and social capital, as well as the impact you have as a company on biodiversity and human rights violations in the chain. The directive is an extension of the existing European directive around sustainability reporting: the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD). The CSRD will apply since 1 January 2024 to companies currently covered by the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) and from 2025 to large companies not currently covered.

What is the purpose of CSRD?

The aim of the CSRD is to increase transparency on sustainability efforts of companies and organisations, and improve the quality of sustainability information. This enables consumers and customers to compare companies based on their commitment to sustainability.

As an SME, am I obliged to report on the CSRD?

No. The current directive only applies to listed companies. From financial year 2025, they will apply to all large companies (companies with >250 employees, a turnover higher than €50 million per year, a balance sheet total of more than €25 million).  However, due to chain effects, the CSRD also affects small(er) companies. For this purpose, the voluntary standard (VSME) was recently designed.

What is the voluntary standard (VSME)?

The VSME standards (Voluntary sustainability reporting standard for non-listed SMEs, currently still draft) follow the same ESRS structure as the CSRD (policies, action plans, targets and performance), but are much more compact. These, more proportional standards, also serve as a starting point for CSRD-compliant companies to avoid arbitrariness. The size of your company determines the level of detail of environmental (E), social (S) and business conduct issues (G) you can report on.

In addition to the meetings, do I have to factor in more time for my participation?

Each meeting has preparation and elaboration time through literature and assignments. These assignments will help you progress through the programme and provide an outline for your first steps with VSME.

Can I join with more than one colleague?

The participation fee is for one employee. Would you like to bring colleagues? Then contact us to discuss the possibilities.

Can I take the programme in English?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to follow the programme in English. The language of the meetings, assignments and communication is Dutch.

Are the meetings online or physical?

The start and final meeting are physical in the Utrecht area. The second and third meetings are online.
